Samsung's Rolling Phone Patent Shows What's Next
Samsung is cooking up something weird and potentially useful. Patent documents show a device called the Galaxy Z Rollable that actually rolls out to make the screen bigger, kind of like those old desk organizers that pull open. The motor mechanism looks solid in the diagrams.
But here's the thing: does anyone actually want this? Foldables still feel niche after five years on the market, and rolling phones add another layer of mechanical complexity that could break in your pocket. Samsung's betting that once the tech gets reliable enough, people will want a tablet-sized screen they can slip into their jacket.
This isn't shipping tomorrow. The patents suggest Samsung is still in the early engineering phase, testing materials and mechanisms. Other companies like LG and TCL filed similar rollable patents years ago but never made them real. Samsung has better execution, though, so if anyone gets this to consumers, it's probably them.
